Although I never use it in the microwave, I had no idea plastic wrap was toxic if not heated!

dlb823, I had no idea the plastic wrap was bad. It now has me wondering about the plastic lunch bags I put my sandwiches in for work.

I know! Think about the gazillion of kids' lunches packed in those bags each day! And how many foods are sold in plastic wrap!

I am finding the coconut oil discussion really interesting. I can recall when I was younger, in my 20's, smearing commercial "moisturizing" lotions all over my body in the winter becuase I had such horrible dry skin! My skin would feel like it was on fire and it was dry and flaky. When I would apply them to my face, it hurt like the dickens! I was prone to break outs also.
Now I only use raw, organic coconut oil - much cheaper (thank you Vitacost!
and I have no dry skin at all. I don't even need to use it most days! When winter chapping gets real bad, I break open a wheat germ capsule and use that (Standard Process guarantees the purity of theirs) and that creates a barrier for being out in the wind and such. I agree - you can do it from the inside out too - . Getting rid of shampoo and soap is another thing that has really helped my skin. I only use Dr Woods Castile liquid soap - they have peppermint, almond; all different kinds and it's all natural and eco-friendly. It works just as well as any deodorant or other bar soaps from the store. It makes for a good shampoo too; and again, from online places like Vitacost or Iherb, it is very very reasonable if you can get a free shipping offer!
I have stopped using all commercial laundry soaps and that has helped all of our skin incredibly. My kids used to get those awful dry itchy rashes and they no longer do. I make my own powdered detergent using only Ivory soap, washing soda and borax - economical, easy and it works extremely well!
I will say that I miss perfume. That was something I really used to enjoy. But it's not worth the endocrine disruption to me. Big changes can be hard to make, but little changes, one at a time, make it a lot easier!

calamtykel can you share your recipe for the homemade laudry detergent? I would be interested in it.

Me too!

I have pretty much deceased the comestic products that I buy. I still can't give up MAC (lawd help me here).
But what is one to do when they want to smell GOOD. I now spray perfume on my clothes after I am dressed. Any nature fragances out there????

Hi ladies,
Say, there's a GREAT special going on right now through end of august for thyroid tests at directlabs.com. There's a $99 combo that measures TSH, free T3, free T4, and two different antibodies. I've had bloodwork on my wish list for a long time. This might be the catalyst that bubbles it up to the top of my to do's.

I have a question. My gyno checked my hormone levels and my testosterone came back really low .02 my estrodial was good at 380 so I am no where near menopause. She wants me to see an endocrinologist and possible get on bio identical hormones with the testosterone not estrogen. Anybody know anything about this kind of stuff. After I read up on low testosterone it makes so much since that I have lost alot of body hair over the last couple of years. Started having hot flashes a year before bc. My biggest concern is that low testosterone has a high rate of causing osteoporosis, but my MO already put me on Fosomax so I am ahead of the game on that. You just don't hear much about low testosterone so anything anyone knows would be helpful

Hi sherryc, I've had hormone testing on my wish list for a long time. I've found someone who does phone consults to help with hormone balancing. Thing is though, there's a looooong list of labs to be done first and it priced out at about $900. Ouch. I've decided not to wait for all or nothing. I'm going to get at least some things tested through directlabs. Looking through what I spend on supplements, the labs dont' look so expensive anymore. lol If you have good insurance or money in the bank, you would have better access to a bunch of labs.
A long while back I was contemplating a visit to an endocrinologist, but here at the end of the earth, I reckoned I'd fare better with trying this that and the other thing with supplements. It's been a long road, but at least I'm feeling better steadily. Now I need to get some labs to pinpoint where I might have imbalances or deficiencies. Feeling good isn't enough anymore. I want to feel fantastic. I hope you can find a good endo that will suit your needs.

Althea I do have great cover on labs. My insurance covers it 100% so I have decide to find and endo in San Antonio that specializes in hormones if I can. I have a list and I am just going to call around. I feel like they will do more lab testing than other docs and then I can see if my adrenals are mal functioning as well. I agree with you I want to feel fantastic. My MO said he was ok with me using hormones for the testoterone but not ER and PR. I keep you posted on what I found out about an endo in San Antonio

Sherry & Althea... The naturopathic doc I'm seeing sent both my 24-hr. urine test (for hormones) and also an antibody test (for gluten intolerance) to Genova Diagnostics. I haven't seen her for the results yet, but she mentioned choosing that lab because they will bill insurance. Both had pretty hefty co-pays ($179 & $149), but worth it if they provide answers and peace of mind re. estrogen levels and other important things. Deanna
PS ~ I just looked at their website, and they have all sorts of tests for all sorts of concerns. And you can search by disease or condition to find the pertinent ones. PPS ~ Oh-oh... I see some complaints about this lab, especially their billing practices! Hopefully, I won't have that problem, but just a heads up to do your own homework before possibly using them, and I'll keep you posted!
0 -
dlb, I used the Genova labs and didn't have any problems with the insurance covering. I did have to cover the co-pay and it was 149. It was worth knowing the results rather than using a local lab that doesn't use the saliva test.

Hey ladies, I have some exciting news! I'm going to New York City! My school is having a conference in New York City this month. Among the many notable speakers, Deepak Chopra will present the keynote address. As soon as it was announced, I wanted to go, but it seemed out of reach. Around the same time, my I get news from my brother who works in nyc parttime has leased an apt there. Bascially, I have a zero budget for this trip, but the conference is free to the students. I have a place to stay. As of last night, I now have a plane ticket too.
I hate to impose so heavily on family, but I decided to bag that sentiment and just ask for what I want on this one. Now I'm going to NYC! yee haw! Not only am I looking forward to Deepak Chopra and some time with family, but more than anything I'm going to be in a stadium full of fellow students and graduates, people just like me. I love my coursework, and the distance learning experience has been great, but I'm the only student in my city going there. I am so looking forward to making a bunch of new friends!

Way to go Althea! I am so happy you are going to be able to go. Maybe you will get to meet up with Designer Mom and check out that organic rooftop hydroponic garden restuarant she mentioned. And of course you can visit ground zero. That will certainly be emotional. I know how you feel about being surrounded by people with a passion for health. I just got back from the Usana convention and I met so many amazing people-happy and healthy. So many people around here are just in a sad frame of mind right now, with the jobless numbers. I heard some fantastic doctors and athletes speak about Usana, convincing me even more about why Usana is a company that I trust. I got to hear Dr. Northrup speak (she is hilarious) and I got to room with one of her team members. I even caught a tennis ball autographed by Billie Jean King, one of the women I most admire for her courage and conviction to fight for rights for women in athletics.
I know it has been quiet around here lately, I have been so busy working on my Think Beyond the Pink weekend. Hope to see some of you there!

Althea that is great news about your trip and wonderful that it is working out for you to go. Is your mom going to go or will she be ok by herself at home? I know how excited you have been about this class and it will be great to meet up with fellow students. How exciting for you.

Althea,
That is amazing! You will enjoy that conference, and even more so since you are getting a significant discount by staying with relatives. Just have a great time in NYC, and learn all you can from the conference. I am certain you will get a lot out of this trip!!
0 -
vivre, your conference sounds great. I loved Billie Jean King when she played tennis, esp the battle of the sexes against what's his face. ... what was that guy's name?
sherry, good heavens, there's no way mom could make this trip. I have kitty and mom covered by two friends and neighbors. I'm bribing them with food. I'll be loading up my mom's fridge with food and someone each day will assemble the meal and eat with my mom. I'll rearrange her appointments so she doesn't have to go anywhere. Beyond that, she just needs minor things around the house -- watering the grass, feeding the turtles, checking the mail, etc. I'm just crossing my fingers that she'll pull through her colonoscopy tomorrow without any complications or anything of concern.
marianna, thanks for the moral support. ...that's pretty much how all this started. My ex sister in law and I still keep in contact, and she's the one who first said "you should GO!" And here I am, ticket in hand, and zero budget, but I'll rummage that up somehow too.
Designermom has pm'd me several times already and is my personal nyc travel mentor. Thanks DM!

Althea I was wondering cause I did not think her mom could make it. glad you got it worked out with friends. It is amazing what food bribery can do. haha I hope everything goes well tomoroow with the colonoscopy. You are going to have an amazing time.

Sherry: Last year I went to a private doctor that specializes in bioidentical hormones. He ran blood and saliva tests and I ended up low in Vitamin D-3, progestrone, and DHEA. He put me on a high dose of Vitamin D (5,000 mg), and low levels of the rest. He also gave me an additional pill to take to stimulate my thyroid which was not functioning properly on just the Synthroid. I can honestly say that six months later I feel better and have more energy than I've had in a long, long time! Did I mention that I'm 71 years young? I had been asking my PCP for years about my thyroid and why I was tired and losing my hair and they just said "you're getting old...live with it". Not acceptable.
Now, unfortunately, I'm facing a possible BC diagnosis, and hope that I won't have to give all this up to get better. I do not want to do chemo as I've seen what it's done to my friends, and they are not alive today. I might do radiation, but definitely not chemo.

Kaara so sorry you are facing a possible diag. I'll pray that everything comes out B9. I did make an appt with an endocronogist and will see what they do as far as testing. I really want my adrenal glands checked as that can cause low testosterone. Otherwise I will head to the Dr for the bioidentical hormones and see what she has to say.

I went to my appointment today and was told to take all records to Florida for further evaluation since that is where we reside most of the time. Still no diagnosis, but my PCP in N. Carolina was very calming and said a couple of months would not make any difference but to make the app't now so I won't have to wait, which made good sense.
0 -
Kaara good luck and keep us posted. And your PCP is right. a couple of months will not make a difference.

I came across this video on skin cancer and the use of cannabis oil to heal it....I hope I'm not offending anyone by posting this but it is worth a look-see.

Sherryc: A safer alternative to taking testosterone is trying .5 mg of Pregnenolone. If you take it after you have had your morning coffee/tea, breakfast and shower it works best. Beware: It can give you some irritability and you may need to start with a half a dose.

Terri you look great! Love the new pic!

MBJ thanks for the info. I went to the endocrinologist yesterday and he is checking my adrenal glands and pituitary gland and a bunch of other stuff as I am too young to have this low of testosterone I go back in two weeks to get the results and try to figure out what is going on.
0 -
Sherry: So glad to hear they are checking these. I have adrenal exhaustion and it's a long road back to health. My testosterone is fine it's my adrenals that are shot.
0 -
MBJ I read on that and also addisons disease. Addisons really sounds more like what I am going through but I guess I'll know for sure in a couple of weeks. On what I read on adrenal exhaustion and diet I already do so at least I don't have to learn new things there. I'll keep you posted. I was just so glad the Dr did not take any of it lightly and listed and asked me losts of questions.

my560sl, I have had melanoma and have watched that video. If I could get my hands on that cannabis oil, I would definitely give it a shot! There are many studies showing its efficacy. It's a shame they do not make it available (at least not in my state.)
0 -
SherryC: I take a lot of supplements recommended from the www.DrLam.com site. The site has everything you ever wanted to know about your adrenal glands. Glad to hear your dr. is taking this seriously.0
-
MBJ ~ Thanks for posting that link! Great information! I'm seeing my Naturopathic doctor today, and wanted to ask her about adrenal fatigue, which I learned about here. Now, after watching Dr. Lam's video on it, I understand it much better. What especially caught my attention is that being on TSH for the past 6 weeks, has made me feel worse, which is something Dr. Lam mentions in his video. And, if it's caused by stress, I don't see how we could not have some degree of adrenal fatigue after dealing with bc. Deanna
PS ~ Althea, I also wanted to wish you a great trip to NYC! I'm sure you'll have a blast, and I'm thrilled to know that you'll be meeting DesignerMom! Happy to see you following your dreams!

MBJ thanks for the link, I'll probably have time this afternoon to check it out.

Hi ladies, I posted this elsewhere on this site, but am really upset as I think I've created an imbalance. I am almost 2 years out from Dx, and I finally felt like I was "balanced" hormonally speaking..... regular, 30 day periods, few breakouts, no tenderness. I accidently took chasteberry in a multivitamin that I purchased (who knows what else it had in it, come to think of it). Now I have no period, cycle's thrown off.Do I jump start it with natural progesterone? Let it be? Worried sick about it, because I am envisioning that estrogen has taken over! Ugh.0

Hi ladies, I'm back from NYC! I had such an awesome time. Deepak Chopra's keynote address was exceptional. Lots of people were in the audience, but still, being in the same room with him was magical for me. IIN brought other top notch speakers too. Mark Hyman, Joel Fuhrmann, Sally Fallon, Pierre Dukan, David Katz. I made new friends, saw some sights, ate delicious food (not all of my food choices were top notch, but I enjoyed every delicious bite).
I am so IINspired! I complete my class in February, and I really like the structure of the learning experience. Part of it is starting to see clients while still in school. When we were first told to do this several weeks ago, I was like, who, me? The conference gave me a giant boost and kickstart. Now I feel rarin' to go. Kicking off my first issue of my newsletter is on my to-do list. If anyone wants to subscribe, just send me a pm and I'll send you a link.
0 -
Althea I'm so glad you had a great time and came back inspired. You will do great. I think I am on your newsletter list but if not send me a link you have my email.
Marianna I don't know anything about chasteberry, but I would be freaking as well if I had worked so hard to get it all straight. urgh

Althea- I'm so glad you had a great, inspiring trip to NYC. I believe you are positioned perfectly to help people get healthy. Even people who never connected the food to health link are hungry for help. Just yesterday two elderly ladies stopped us in the grocery store asking us to confirm if the vegetable they were holding was endive. They told us Dr. Oz said it could help prevent cancer and wanted to try it. Yesterday on Dr. Oz his guests were Dr. Andrew Weil and Deepak Chopra. I have a feeling we will no longer be the "fringe" movement, it is going mainstream. About time!

my569sel, actually I think my chiropractor used it for his skin cancer. He used it a few years back. He said it was illegal and he purchased it from another country. His face worsen before it got better that is when using the oil. The cancer did disappear from his face. I am so glad you posted it because this chiropractor is deceased, and I wanted to ask him where he got the oil.
To add, my chiropractor died in June of lung, bone and brain cancer. He contributes his last bout of cancer to his heavy smoking. I couldn't believe he was once a naturalpath/chiropractor and smoked. He was the nicest guy ever...miss him. The film is great...I'm going to post it on my holistic site.

my560select: www.PhoenixTears.ca/ is a link regarding hemp oil. It is supposed to "cure" many cancers and it doesn't get you high. This site shows you how to make it. If I were to discover mets I would be looking into this as it certainly couldn't hurt!0

hello! I haven't been on here in ages and I'm not caught up, so sorry to drop in the middle this way, but I have a question for you savvy ladies! Specifically, iodine knowledgable folks. Under my nutritionist's guidance, I have been taking a high dose of Iodoral (37.5....uh whatevers. Is it mg? mcg?) for about 18 months, and we finally retested to see how things were going. My levels went from 63% to...66%!! Basically no improvement. It seems clear to me that I'm not absorbing it but my provider was stumped. Has anyone heard of this, do you know of things that can disrupt iodine absorbtion?
I am switching to a liquid form but I don't think it's that simple-- the reason we retested is that I thought I maybe had high enough levels now, b/c I had started having excess heat when I take it. Meaning, it's not just passing through me, it's being at least partially assimilated, it just isn't...working.
I wanted to ask on the iodine forum but I can't find it for some reason! So also, if anyone knows where that is, that would be helpful. Thanks all!

jessamine, do you know what your TSH is? I'm no expert, but that's something my naturopathic doctor recently picked up on for me. Mine was technically in the "normal," range (per my conventional docs), but way off from ideal. I believe this impacts how the iodine is metabolized. Deanna
0 -
Jessamine The iodine protocol is pretty complicated, in that there is no one size fits all. That is why Stephanie's iodine group is going non stop with people questioning the protocol. It takes a lot of trial and error, and personal dedication to figure it all out. That said, the amt of iodine you are taking may seem like a lot, but is actually low. In fact, most people work up to a minimum of 50 mg daily of iodoral or lugols. It takes a lot if you are especially full of toxic halides. And you must take the companion nutrients of selenium, magnesium, vit c. etc, and do the sea salt loading to flush out the toxins. I know it is a long way, but Stephanie will be speaking at the ThinkBeyondThePink event I am planning in the Chicago area Oct. 21-23. You should try to come and hear her speak. She also has docs on her yahoo group that explains a lot about the protocol. You guys should try to send your ND's. I am trying to put together a doctor's workshop with Stephanie so that we get more docs who understand how to help patients with iodine.

Has anyone every done a foot detox soak? Just curious about it and wondered what any of you thought.
0 -
jessamine, you didn't mention what kind of test. Was it an iodine loading test? I've had two or three since starting iodine therapy in 08. I have lousy absorption rates. It's a common problem. Iodine is a halide. Other halides are bromine, chlorine, flouride. Bromine especially is highly pervasive in our dailiy lives. It's in fire retardents (carpets, fabrics, electronics, new cars). All the halides compete for the same receptors. Also, poor absorption can indicate what's called a symporter problem. Extra vitamin c is warranted in the case of damaged symporters. Taking the entire protocol is important -- vitamin c, magnesium, selenium, and unrefined salt. The iodine forum is a yahoo group. Look out for a lot of emails. It's a very active group. I'm so glad the list owner will be speaking at vivre think beyond the pink. There's a lot of bad information in circulation about iodine, and the iodine group will hopefully lead to getting the correct information into the light of day.

sherry, I did one of those foot detox baths shortly after I finished chemo. I don't believe the sludge that ends up in the pan is truly all from our bodies. In fact, I saw an expose type piece on TV later that basically said the sludge is mostly caused by a chemical reaction in the metal electrodes that are part of the setup. But at the time it felt good, and I felt like I had eliminated some toxins.
My sister, who has a fairly significant case of LE, got an LE massage at the same place at the same time, and that turned out to be a disaster. The were very rough with her arm (the way it's done in Europe, according to them), and it made her LE a lot worse for a good week. So that probably also contributes to my negative opinion about my experience. Deanna
0 -
Thanks for iodine feedback! That gives me some ideas to work with. xo
0 -
Deanna that does sound disastrous. I would not have let just anyone do a full body lymphatic massage on me except this massage therapist I have used for years and trust her. I knew that she would be honest about whether we should try it or not. Her husband is a PT and she use to work in a PT clinic. I also read on the foot soak about the metal electrodes, but it was a groupon and cheap so thought I would try it.
